PNG Community Initiatives
Port Moresby City Mission
Nautilus is committed to bettering the quality of life for the people living within the communities in which it operates. In 2007, Nautilus committed $US100,000 in funding to the Port Moresby City Mission. This program provides youths in their teens and twenties with accommodation and job training in rural centres, away from the negative influence of peer groups. Once the youths learn the necessary skills, the Mission eases their transition to urban society and helps them obtain employment. Nautilus will explore more opportunities for community partnerships in the future.
Skill Building
Nautilus is committed to local recruitment and training. We are currently engaged in a program to build skill and capacity in Papua New Guinea. We have employed and provided vocational training for geologists, geophysicists and environmental scientists in this new marine-focused industry.
Nautilus intends to apply this commitment to all countries in which it operates; employing suitably qualified host country Nationals, and developing training and localisation programs to ensure their future training and professional development.
Duke University Opportunity Bursary
Nautilus is committed to developing scientific knowledge within PNG and we actively support students who pursue studies in marine science.
In partnership with Duke University, Nautilus is offereing the opportunity to travel to the USA to enroll in the Duke University spring semester (12th January – 15th May 2011) marine science program and receive training in marine conservation. The recipient of the scholarship will have the opportunity to learn state-of-the-art techniques and work in the laboratories of world leading deep sea ecologists. Click here to read more on how to apply.
William Saleu, from the Island region, was the recipient of the 2008-2009 Nautilus-Duke University Opportunity Bursary. William was enrolled in the Duke University marine science program. He was given the opportunity to learn state-of-the-art techniques and work in the laboratory of Dr. Cindy Lee Van Dover, a world leading deep sea biologist. William studied the animals sampled during the Nautilus 2008 environmental campaign, conducted on board MV Nor Sky. He recently received a grant from the International Seabed Authority to further his studies in deep sea marine science and marine conservation biology
Martha Mungkaje, from the Sepik Province, was the 2007 recipient of this scholarship. Martha worked on samples from Solwara 1 collected on board the vessel Wave Mercury. Martha is currently a lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea in the Biology Department.
Nautilus Minerals was nominated for its Nautilus-Duke Opportunity Bursary, as one of five finalists in the 2010 Asia Mining Congress Sustainability Awards. The Awards recognise, reward and promote industry-led community development initiatives that provide long-term social and economic benefits to local communities.
Namatanai Community Centre
In December 2008, Nautilus presented to Hon. Byron Chan, Member for Namatanai in the National Parliament, on behalf of the Governor of New Ireland, K100,000 towards the Namantanai Community Centre. The centre will be a “hub” for community development initiatives in central New Ireland Provinces.
Community Development Fund
Together with a locally selected steering group, we will manage a Community Development Fund that will receive two Kina per tonne of ore mined. We will work with the Provincial Government of New Ireland and other island provinces to identify community priorities and to create opportunities for improved quality of life through the provision of health and education services.
